THE OPPORTUNITY:
NZME Whanganui has a fantastic opportunity for a journalist looking for a new challenge.
Our reporters work across print, digital, radio and video. You may specialise in one or more of these areas and we’ll give you training and support to grow confident in the others as needed. You will work across the newsroom’s seven-day roster as required.
JOURNALISM SKILLS:
• Generate unique and compelling story ideas to create content that beats the competition and wins audiences.
• Maintain a strong network of contacts and story sources, together with good local knowledge and a wide awareness of news and current topics of interest.
• Deliver complete, error-free packages;
• When filing for digital/print, include multiple images, video, SEO headlines, related links, social embeds, classifications, tagging and other elements as required. Capture images and video for your own reports when needed and save images into archive systems as instructed.
• Deliver voice reports or live Q&A sessions from news scenes for radio, if required.
• Ensure premium content is thoroughly planned and well-executed.
• Help promote NZME's web and social presence, e.g. provide live social coverage during breaking news events and amplify your own and colleagues' stories over social channels.
PLANNING AND ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS:
• Work quickly and efficiently, managing time and prioritising to meet all deadlines.
• Operate with an NZME-wide mentality, fostering strong communication between the group's newsrooms and ensuring all needs of the network are met.
• Attend newsroom meetings as required.
AUDIENCE FOCUS:
• Think audience-first, using analytics and research data to understand and respond to what audiences want.
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
• Master all necessary equipment and production systems for your role.
• With training and support, learn and adapt to new media techniques across multiple platforms - e.g. print, digital, social, radio, video.
ABOUT YOU:
- You'll have a relevant tertiary qualification or professional experience.
- You’ll be committed to delivering high-impact, authentic, relentlessly interesting journalism for our audiences.
- Your attributes and talents will include high-quality research and writing skills.
- A positive attitude and strong communication skills are also essential.
