We are seeking a dynamic Obstetrician & Gynaecologist to join the team of 11 Consultant SMOs at Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand, Southern. Southern has the largest geographical coverage of all the New Zealand regions, we take pride in all the services we provide, and our aim is to improve, promote and protect the health of our region. We believe that our dedicated and passionate staff are a significant driving force behind the achievement of these standards, and we need more like-minded people to help us continue providing for our community.

Our department supports a maternity unit with an antenatal and postnatal area with approximately 20 beds, operating theatre, and antenatal and outpatient obstetric clinics. Dunedin Hospital has a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a dedicated Women's Health Unit. The service is supported by a team of experienced midwives, obstetrics, gynaecology, and colposcopy nurses.

The successful applicant will be expected to provide consultant led antenatal, gynaecology and colposcopy clinic services as well as working in Maternity, surgical wards, operating theatre, early pregnancy clinic and the emergency department. There will also be a requirement to provide outlying clinics and support of rural maternity units.

On Call duties include responsibility for labour and birthing, acute antenatal and gynaecological assessments and admissions and responsibility of all inpatient acute or from elective surgery after hours.

Day to day supervision of junior medical staff is required with registrars and SHOs and final year medical students working within the unit and there is the expectation to pick up a role as supervisor of training for some of these junior doctors.

As a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist for us, you will have a personal commitment to providing an effective and efficient inpatient and outpatient service and an unequivocal dedication to working as part of a tight knit team. This position offers you a broad experience in all aspects of Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

Mōu ake - About you

You will require prior experience as a Consultant, Fellow or Senior Registrar, be accredited by RANZCOG and hold registration (or be eligible for registration) as a Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

You will need to be certified to provide colposcopy services. You will have a demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and to providing training to students at all levels.

Salary range

This role belongs to the ASMS Collective Agreement and falls between the Step 1 ($185,380) and Step 15 ($267,980 per annum pro rata)
