This is an exciting opportunity to apply for the position of Ophthalmology Registrar in Tairāwhiti (Gisborne Hospital) commencing February 2026 to January 2027. The Ophthalmology Department offer supportive working conditions and are committed to teaching.

About the Team/Service/ Location

Gisborne Hospital, a 110 bed acute care hospital which serves a wide geographical area, Tairāwhiti, extending up the East Cape of New Zealand, creating enormous scope and variety in the work available to an enthusiastic registrar. Providing healthcare to a population of 54,000, Health NZ Te Whatu Ora Tairāwhiti is well supported locally by comprehensive surgical services and has a full range of diagnostic facilities on site including a new MRI scanner and CT scanner. We have strong ties with our tertiary referral centre in Waikato.

Situated on the eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island, Gisborne “Tairāwhiti” – “The light shines on the water” is the first city in the world to see the rising sun of the new day. About you

  • Suitable for Resident Medical Officers PGY3 and above.
  • Applicants must be registered, or eligible for registration, with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
  • You will need to be a NZ or Australian citizen or resident, or have an appropriate visa to be eligible to live and work in NZ. For more information on visa requirements please visit the Immigration NZ website
  • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth
  • Experience in projects / initiatives which give effect to Te Tiriti principles and frameworks, and the application of Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.
