Te Kura Āwhina Ora o te Raki (Northern Health School) is seeking a passionate, knowledgeable, and committed Pou Ahurea to join our leadership team and help shape the future of education for ākonga Māori whose health needs prevent them from attending their regular schools.

As Pou Ahurea, you will give effect to Te Tirīti o Waitangi and be a driving force behind ensuring our kura is a place where Māori identity, language, and culture are valued and actively nurtured, leading to improved educational outcomes and a stronger sense of belonging for ākonga Māori.

Working closely with the Cultural Leadership Team, Kaiako Māori, Kaiāwhina, NHS Kaiako and Kaimahi across our kura, you will:

Lead professional learning and development in te ao Māori and cultural competency.
Support and improve outcomes for ākonga Māori, especially those from Māori-medium settings.
Support kaiako to Integrate mātauranga Māori meaningfully across the New Zealand Curriculum.
Promote culturally responsive and relational pedagogies.
Support leaders to strengthen engagement with whānau, iwi, and hapū across the motu.
Help shape the school’s strategic direction from a kaupapa Māori perspective.

A full driver’s licence is required as some travel is a requirement of this role. While our preference is that this role be based in Auckland, other locations would be considered within our school’s geographic coverage area.

About You | Mōu ake

You will be proficient in te reo Māori and have an in-depth knowledge of mātauranga Māori and Māori pedagogical approaches to achieve learning outcomes.

We are looking for a special person with empathy, warmth, and the ability to build strong, respectful relationships across the kura at all levels. Full New Zealand teacher registration and experience teaching in New Zealand is required.

Te Kura Āwhina Ora o te Raki (Northern Health School) is a Ministry of Education-funded school that provides education and transition support for Year 0–14 students whose health conditions prevent them from attending their regular schools. We are a large, geographically dispersed school with sites across the North Island, from Gisborne and Taranaki to the far north (Kaitaia). While Auckland is the preferred location for this role, other locations within our school’s geographic locations would be considered for the right person.

Northern Health School

Northern Health School is a Ministry of Education funded school set up with the aim of maintaining the education of students who are unable to attend their regular school due to their high health needs. A nurturing school for students with health issues.

We are a large, geographically dispersed school with sites across the North Island, from Gisborne and Taranaki to the far north (Kaitaia).

We have two tasks:
Support student learning
Assist students to return to their regular school as their health allows

We are one of three New Zealand health schools providing community and hospital based teaching to school aged students who are too unwell to attend their regular school.
