Te Haeata/The Opportunity
We are looking for a Principal Advisor – Crown Entity Monitoring to join our System Performance and Monitoring team at the Ministry of Justice.
As Principal Advisor, you will lead the Ministry's approach to monitoring the performance of justice sector Crown entities and provide high-quality, strategic advice to responsible Ministers. This includes assessing performance, identifying emerging issues, and advising on opportunities for improvement.
The Ministry is committed to strengthening its Crown entity monitoring approach, and this senior role is critical to that effort. You will help drive improved accountability and performance across the justice sector through a strong focus on outcomes, innovation, and system leadership.
While you will not be responsible for Crown entity board appointments (this sits with a separate team), you will have significant influence through your engagement with entities' boards and Chief Executives.
Ō pūkenga/Skills and Experience
We are seeking someone who his politically savvy and has sound judgment. To be successful in this role, you will also have:
- significant experience in Crown entity monitoring, with a strong focus on assessing performance and financial sustainability
- a proven ability to work confidently and effectively with Ministers, Chief Executives, boards, and senior executives
- strong initiative and self-direction, with the ability to identify opportunities, solve problems, and deliver outcomes with minimal oversight
- exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and persuasively
- a strong track record of building and maintaining effective relationships and stakeholder networks across agencies and sectors
- sound understanding of governance practices and procedures, both board and internal
- knowledge of public sector investment systems and processes, including Budget cycles, accountability requirements, and the use of performance information to support evidence-based decision making.

Utu ā-tau/Salary
The appointing salary for this role will be between $129,129 and $179,192 based on skills and experience.
