We’re looking for a Principal Engineer – Data Platforms to lead the evolution of our data engineering practice at Kiwibank. This is a hands-on, high-impact role where you’ll set technical direction, embed modern data delivery practices, and shape how we design, build, and scale our data platforms.
You’ll work across architecture, engineering, and product, collaborating with both internal and vendor teams to deliver reliable, scalable, and well-run data systems. With a focus on automation, continuous delivery, and agile thinking, you’ll help drive engineering excellence and enable the delivery of data solutions that provide real value to the business.

Key skills and experience we’re looking for:
- Strong hands-on experience in data engineering – modelling, pipelines, and platform delivery
- Proven leadership of people and technical teams, including direct line management
- Proven ability to uplift engineering practices in complex environments
- Deep understanding of CI/CD, DevOps, and agile in a data context
- Experience working with onshore and offshore/vendor teams

Skilled at navigating technical and business conversations to drive outcomes
Bonus:
- Experience with tools like dbt, Airflow, Kafka, and Snowflake
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
- Background in regulatory or financial environments
