The Principal Software Engineer plays a critical leadership role in driving the successful delivery of software projects by overseeing the efficient and effective operation of engineering teams. This position collaborates closely with product, project, programme teams, vendors, and technical stakeholders to ensure software solutions are designed and developed to the highest standards. The role emphasizes modern, innovative approaches and quality assurance to deliver robust, scalable, and forward-thinking technology solutions aligned with business goals.
About the Team/Service/ Location
The Principal Software Engineer reports into the Manager, Development which sits within the Digital Applications & Products function. This team is responsible for the delivery and support of digital products and services that enable essential corporate, regulatory, and sector-specific functions across the organisation. The team plays a crutial role ensuring systems are robust, secure, and aligned with modern technology standards.
Teams are structured around the applications and products they support, enabling standardised processes and nationally consistent outcomes. Organised into service portfolios and domains, this structure ensures delivery is aligned to clinical and operational needs while advancing national standardisation efforts.
About you
As a seasoned digital leader with a strong technical foundation, the successful candidate will thrive in complex delivery environments and bring a passion for driving effective, scalable, and innovative software solutions. The Principal Software Engineer is responsible for driving the design and delivery of modern, high-quality software solutions while optimising asset lifecycle management with a focus on cost-efficiency, compliance, and operational excellence. You will also have the following skills and experience to support your success in the role:
- Over 15 years of progressive experience in software engineering, with a strong background in designing, developing, and maintaining complex, scalable systems.
- Proven leadership in guiding and mentoring high-performing development teams, with a track record of delivering in fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environments.
- Deep expertise in software development methodologies (Agile, Waterfall), and proficiency across a wide range of programming languages, frameworks, and tools.
- Strong understanding and proven capabilities of cloud-native technologies and modern architecture practices, with a focus on building reliable, maintainable, and future-ready solutions.
- Comprehensive experience with AWS and Azure cloud services is essential for this role.
- Experience in the health sector is highly desirable in this role.
