ABOUT THE TEAM:
Rocket Lab is a global leader in space exploration, and our Production Automation team is at the forefront of developing and supporting software applications that test spacecraft components and systems for our Electron, Neutron, and Space-System programs. Our supportive, international team of software developers comes from diverse engineering backgrounds, creating a dynamic and collaborative environment.
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
The primary project for this internship is to develop a Python library and accompanying application for remotely querying and controlling a thermal vacuum (TVAC) chamber. Tests running in a TVAC chamber can take many days to complete, and currently, this process requires a test operator to manually input and initialize sequences or regularly return to configure the next stage of testing. Developing software to automate this process will allow the operator to run tests remotely or completely automate the tests, freeing up the operator for other duties.
YOUR MISSION:
As a Production Automation Intern, you will collaborate with avionics and manufacturing engineers to develop, improve, and support software applications for functionally testing spacecraft components and systems. You will work closely with stakeholders during both the development phase of new components and their transition to the production line. Our team is deeply involved in the test rig bring-up process, rig maintenance, and assisting engineering teams with evaluating test result data.
Key Responsibilities will include:
- Develop a Software Library: Create a Python library for communicating with the TVAC chamber.
- Documentation: Write comprehensive documentation describing how your software library can be used to control the TVAC chamber.
- Daemon Service Development: Develop a daemon service that can be run on a server, providing asynchronous control of the TVAC chamber.
- Graphical User Interface: Develop a graphical user interface for interacting with the TVAC chamber, either directly or through the daemon service.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
- Currently enrolled in one of the following fields: Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Robotic Engineering, Software Engineering.
- Proficiency in Python programming.
- Experience using device interfacing protocols such as TCP/UDP and serial communication.
- Familiarity with Git or similar source control tools.
REQUIREMENT:
Available to work full-time, on-site for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks beginning November 2025.
