About our team/Mō te tīma

The Department of Medicine at the University of Otago, Christchurch has a mission to improve the lives of people in New Zealand through health education and research. The Department hosts some of the most productive researchers in New Zealand with strengths in heart health, brain research and musculoskeletal medicine.

We house over 100 academic researchers, many of whom have clinical roles in the Canterbury District Health Board. The Department is physically housed in Christchurch Hospital and has close links to other departments in the University (including Pathology & Biomedical Science) and hospital Departments (including Cardiology and the Emergency Department) and throughout the Christchurch and regional hospital campuses.

The role/Te mahi

This is a research-funded position that involves the clinical and administrative requirements supporting the MBIE AI and Healthy Ageing Grant: “AI-InterRAI: AI-Assisted InterRAI Assessment and Evaluation for Person-Centred Care Planning and Healthy Ageing”. The successful candidate will arrange and facilitate consenting for automated InteRAI assessments, observe them being completed and perform scientific tests for their accuracy. Additionally, they will also support consent from individuals and the scanning of their medical records by artificial intelligence under strict supervision and testing the scientific merit of this.

Other key tasks and duties include:
  • Ensure research protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are understood and followed.
  • Attend training, complete assessments and competency checks as required.
  • Contribute to scientific papers and future grant writing.
  • Support applications for relevant ethical approval for the project(s).
  • Present findings to scientific or clinical audiences.
  • Communicate with participants to ensure their understanding of the project.
  • Support dissemination of findings to ACC, Health NZ and other stakeholders.
  • Develop, deploy and assess AI generated care plans for patients and their families.

Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

You will be a clear and effective communicator with the ability to work independently as well as part of a professional team. You will also be an organized individual with strong time management skills. As an effective collaborator, you bring people together and build trusting partnerships with others.

We are also looking for candidates with:
  • Understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its relevance to the health of Māori in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
  • A current practicing certificate, as require by their regulatory body (Nursing Council of New Zealand)
  • Previous experience as an interRAI assessor would be advantageous but not essential
  • Previous research experience would be advantageous but not essential

This is a part-time (11.25 hours per week) fixed term position (34-month duration), based in Ōtautahi, Christchurch.

The appointment range for this role is $81,301 to $102,724.
