He angitutanga | About the role

This role provides logistical support for rangers based in North Canterbury, out of the Rangiora District Office. Duties include supporting both the field and leadership teams in North Canterbury. You can expect to do a variety of work, primarily in the office, although at times you will be required to work in the field. You will need to able to stay away from home in the backcountry for several nights on occasion. A reasonable level of technical knowledge and physical fitness would be beneficial to ensure a high quality of work is being done safely and to a high standard.

Your responsibilities will include planning and organising equipment and supplies, administrative support, and assisting with technical work programmes relating to:

  • Threatened species management.
  • Bird identification, monitoring and research
  • Animal and pest control programmes

This role is 40 hours per week for a fixed term of 3 years.

If you have some of the following, we are keen to hear from you:

  • Experience working closely with others in a collaborative way
  • Ability to support a team working in remote locations
  • Outstanding planning and organisational skills, with experience leading complex projects
  • A current First Aid Certificate
  • Full New Zealand Drivers Licence
  • Experience and qualifications with Light Utility Vehicles (LUV) and 4WD vehicles
  • High level of fitness
  • Skills and experience in biodiversity management in particular in trapping, pest/predator control or bird monitoring
  • Experience with bio security work on islands
  • Field based equipment qualifications and experience (chainsaw, scrub bar etc.)
  • Capacity for multi day overnight trips on occasion
  • Strong health and safety focus
  • Good work ethic and reliable

Mo te tima | About the team

The successful applicant will join the Kakariki Karaka Operations Team. This consists of the Manukura, Kakariki Karaka (Operations Manager), Senior Ranger, Supervisor, and seven rangers based out of Rangiora in North Canterbury.

The focus of this team is the recovery of kakariki karaka. Rangers undertake surveys, monitoring, nest protection, translocations and trapping work. The landscape scale trapping programme provides constant pest control in mainland kakariki habitat.
