Mo te turanga | About the role
As a Visitor Centre Ranger at the Paparoa National Park Visitor Centre, you will be part of a great team focused on delivering outstanding customer service.
Your role primarily involves ensuring an excellent visitor experience is provided for all domestic and international visitors; through:
- Ensuring visitors have a safe and knowledgeable time in the outdoors
- Providing visitors with up-to-date information about recreational opportunities locally and throughout the country.
- Informing visitors of local conservation projects, condition of tracks and huts and matching their skills and experiences to appropriate opportunities available.
- Promoting and selling conservation merchandise.
- Helping public to book great walks, hut accommodation, and campsites.
- Ensuring branding opportunities are maximised and national campaigns are promoted e.g. Conservation Week, Volunteer week
- Ensuring storytelling and interpretation are concise, truly functional, relevant and up to date.
- Supporting hunters to be able to manage their permits and hunting experience
- Supporting our field teams with safety procedures and other conservation work.
Nga pukenga me nga wheako | Skills and experience
The ideal applicant will have:
- An enthusiastic and active interest in outdoor pursuits and conservation
- An understanding of recreation and tourism opportunities and knowledge of conservation or recreational activities available in the West Coast region
- Experience and demonstrated competence in customer service, computer skills, sales and retail
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to maintain high standards while working under pressure
- A current drivers licence
Desirable:
- A current First Aid certificate, if you don't have one, the successful candidate will have training provided.

We offer shared rental accommodation; this can be arranged for you should you not have any. You will be required to have your own vehicle to access the nearest towns after work hours, as Punakaiki is a 45-minute drive from Greymouth and Westport.

The salary range for this position is $58,816 to $66,578 with the starting salary of the successful applicant based on their relevant skills and experience.
