The Department of Biochemistry is at the forefront of research and innovation in a diverse range of fields. We use basic, curiosity-driven research to understand the underlying processes behind life. Our goals are to enhance the well-being and quality of life of New Zealanders, improve the diagnosis and treatment of disease, and develop technology in agriculture and other industries.
Genomics Aotearoa (GA) is a consortium of ten Universities and Crown Research Institutes, with funding from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment to deliver national capability in genomics and bioinformatics. GA is hosted by the University of Otago, and its management team is based in the Department of Biochemistry.
The role/Te mahi
As a Project Liaison, you will be an enthusiastic and talented individual who will assist with the coordination and delivery of Genomics Aotearoa’s research programme.
This role provides an exciting opportunity, working with an outstanding national team, to assist with the delivery of genomics research projects across the areas of Primary Production, Environment and Health, as well as helping to manage genomic data held within the Aotearoa Genomic Data Repository.
The successful applicant will be part of a nationally distributed team across universities and Crown Research Institutes.
Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
- MSc or PhD degree in a relevant field (e.g., bioinformatics, genomics, molecular biology).
- A broad understanding of current genomics techniques, and how they can be used in an applied research setting.
- A research background in at least one of the following areas: Environment, Primary Production, Health.
- Experience in managing or coordinating large research projects as part of a distributed project team.
- Appropriate knowledge of te ao Māori and tikanga relating to the management of genomic data generated from taonga species.
- Experience working with sensitive data sets, and knowledge of protocols around appropriate data management and handling.

This is a part-time (0.6FTE), fixed term position from 1 July 2025 until 30 June 2030 based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.
The salary range for this position is $94,084 to $111,056 per annum (pro-rata).
