Engage with compelling and developing privacy issues

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner is Aotearoa New Zealand's privacy regulator, protecting the taonga that is personal information. We identify and address systemic and population-scale privacy issues, increase good privacy practice, and champion the privacy rights of all New Zealanders. The Investigations and Dispute Resolution team contributes to this objective by investigating complaints from individuals about an interference with their privacy.

We work in partnership with Maori to take a te ao Maori perspective on privacy, engaging and empowering people and communities vulnerable to serious privacy harm.

Ko ta matou mahi - the role

We are looking for an experienced Investigator to join our Investigations and Dispute Resolution team. This is a role where you will be handling your own caseload in a supportive and collaborative team. It's a great opportunity for a high performer with the experience, skills, and competencies who can hit the ground running, while being supported by other senior practitioners in the team. Location is Wellington preferred, Auckland considered for the right person.

Nga pumanawatanga ou - what you need to bring

  • A tertiary legal qualification and relevant experience in interpreting and applying legal principles.
  • An interest in the Privacy Act and other human rights legislation. Working knowledge of the Act would be an advantage, but not essential.
  • Experience investigating disputes or complaints, particularly in a regulatory environment, would be an advantage.
  • Experience in the use of mediation or other alternative dispute resolution methods to resolve disputes would likewise be an advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and in writing, and the ability to ask the right questions to quickly obtain required information.
  • Strong relationship management skills and the emotional intelligence to effectively deal with complex behaviours and people from all walks of life.
  • An understanding of and ability to recognise and understand key Maori, disability, and other cultural and human rights concepts in a practical setting.
