About the Role

As a Consultant, you - ll play a vital role in the care and management of critically ill and injured patients referred to the Department of Intensive Care. This is a dynamic and varied role, where your day could include caring for tertiary trauma, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, spinal, paediatric, and general medical or surgical patients.

You - ll also contribute to our Deteriorating Patient Outreach Service and participate in the Air Retrieval Service, offering support across the South Island. You - ll have the opportunity to work in our state-of-the-art, 48-bed ICU facility, currently operating 24 beds across two ICU pods.

This is a rewarding opportunity for both newly qualified Specialists seeking to broaden their scope and experienced Intensivists ready for a new challenge within a diverse and complex clinical environment.

About the Team | Service | Location

Our Intensive Care Service is a crucial part of Christchurch Hospital - the largest tertiary, teaching, and research hospital in the South Island. The team provides comprehensive care through:

  • Intensive & High Dependency Care
  • Deteriorating Patient Outreach Service
  • Canterbury Air Retrieval Service

We - re a supportive, tight-knit, and highly skilled multidisciplinary team, passionate about delivering exceptional critical care for the 700,000 residents of the Canterbury region.


About you

As a Specialist you will bring:

  • Vocational registration (or eligibility) with the Medical Council of New Zealand - find out more here.
  • Broad general Intensive Care experience.
  • Experience in Paediatric, Trauma, Neurosurgical, and/or Cardiothoracic Intensive Care (desirable but not essential).
  • Previous experience managing COVID-19 cases (desirable).
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.
