He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role
As a Trainee Signals Line Mechanic, you’ll learn to maintain, install, and repair the overhead line and signalling systems that keep trains moving safely across the network. Working alongside experienced colleagues, you’ll gain hands-on skills in maintaining poles, insulators, overhead wiring, and underground cabling. Safety is at the heart of everything we do – you’ll play a key role in supporting safe, reliable rail operations.
This role is based at your local depot and may involve some travel or overnight stays.

We’re looking for someone who is practical, willing to learn, and safety-focused. You’ll enjoy working outdoors, as part of a close-knit team, and be ready to take on new challenges.
Essential:
- Previous experience in linemen work
- Experience working as part of a team
- Some experience in manual or physical work
- Experience in pulling and jointing cable
- Understanding of basic technical information
- Willingness to work at heights
- NCEA Level 1 in Maths, English, and Science (or equivalent)
- Full Class 1 driver’s licence
Desirable (but not essential):
- Experience or knowledge of electrical work
- Previous experience in rail or infrastructure industries
- Full Class 2 driver’s licence
- Full Class 4 driver’s licence
- Current first aid and CPR certificates
