Ngā kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role

Are you passionate about helping students succeed and thrive at university? As a Student Advisor, you’ll be a trusted first point of contact by welcoming students, answering questions, and guiding them throughout their academic journey. Based at the busy reception area in the Division of STEM, you’ll support a diverse range of qualifications and subject areas.

This role offers a rewarding balance of variety and consistency. You’ll handle a broad range of enquiries, connect students with the right support, and contribute to a positive and inclusive student experience. You’ll also play an active role in providing programme advice, offering pastoral care, and helping students navigate university systems from enrolment through to graduation. Working closely with Senior Student Advisors, you’ll support the smooth delivery of student-focused processes and provide advice that truly makes a difference.

Salary will be in the range of $71,275 to $84,695 per year based on skills, knowledge and experience brought to the position. This is a full-time role (37.5 hours a week), based on our Hamilton Campus.

For more information on the role please see the position description. If you have any questions about the role, please contact Melissa Shirley, Senior Student Advisor, [email protected]. All applications must be submitted through the online portal, emailed applications will not be accepted.

Ko wai koe? – Who are you?

You’re a natural people person who thrives in a fast-paced, student-focused environment. With experience in administration and front-line support, you bring warmth, professionalism, and a genuine desire to help others. You communicate clearly, build strong relationships, and are comfortable working with people from all walks of life.

You’re calm under pressure, detail-focused, and solutions-oriented – someone who can juggle competing priorities without losing your cool. You’re tech-savvy, especially with Excel and Microsoft Office, and you’re quick to learn new systems. You handle shifting demands and interruptions with confidence and composure.

Whether supporting a student through a tough day or helping them navigate enrolment, you bring empathy, efficiency, and a can-do attitude. A background in tertiary education or knowledge of university processes is a plus – but above all, you’re committed to making every student feel seen, supported, and set up for success.

Don’t meet every single requirement?

Research shows that some people are less likely to apply for jobs unless they meet every qualification. At The University of Waikato, we’re committed to creating a diverse, inclusive, and genuine workplace. You might be just the right person for this or another opportunity on our team.
