Lead On-Ground Change for a Healthier, More Sustainable Southland
Are you passionate about environmental change, community engagement, and leading others toward a more sustainable future?
At Environment Southland, we're responsible for protecting and enhancing Southland's land, water, air, and coast. We're evolving to meet the region's environmental needs more effectively, and now we're looking for a skilled, people-focused Team Leader - Land Sustainability to join our leadership team.
About the role
This is a key leadership position within a team that plays a vital role in creating positive on-ground change across Southland's landscapes and catchments. You'll help develop catchment plans that guide environmental action, then support your team to bring those plans to life within local communities.
In this role, you'll need to think strategically while staying grounded in practical outcomes. You'll work closely with iwi, stakeholders, landowners, and the wider community, so your ability to listen, build trust, and communicate with clarity is essential.
Whether your background is in land management, environmental education, regulation, or community engagement, what matters most is your leadership experience, your ability to connect with others, and your commitment to sustainability outcomes.
You'll also bring a strong understanding of the council's Te Tiriti o Waitangi responsibilities and a willingness to uphold the commitments made to Ngāi Tahu ki Murihiku through the Charter of Understanding.
What you'll bring
- A relevant tertiary qualification
- At least 7 years of experience in related roles, including leading teams
- A confident and collaborative leadership style
- An outward focus, with the ability to connect across communities, iwi, and stakeholders
Why join us?
We have a lifestyle that is second to none, with easy access to beaches, rivers, lakes, ski fields, national parks and first-class sports facilities. We pride ourselves on the support we give our team to ensure a good work‑life balance is a priority. And with affordable real estate, short commutes and a great range of schools on offer there is something here for everyone!
An initial offer of remuneration will be made within the range $109,260 - $115,330

Working at Environment Southland requires all of our staff to uphold the council's Te Tiriti o Waitangi responsibilities as part of their day-to-day role. This might be through the appropriate delivery of functions through various legislation where Te Tiriti o Waitangi or partnering with mana whenua is required or upholding the commitments that our elected councillors have made to Ngāi Tahu ki Murihiku through the Charter of Understanding.
