Your Title: Technical Communicator
Job Location: Christchurch, New Zealand
Our Department: Field Systems Segment
Are you ready to use your technical communication expertise to help build products that are literally shaping the world?
We are looking for a creative, collaborative Technical Communicator to join our Information Experience (IX) team. This isn’t a traditional documentation role—it’s an opportunity to help us create end-to-end user assistance solutions across hardware, software, and digital platforms.
We’re at the cutting edge of machine control solutions, bringing together Caterpillar’s expertise in heavy equipment with Trimble’s innovative technology in positioning and software. As a Technical Communicator, you'll help users understand and apply their product knowledge from the moment they get in the cab. You’ll be a user advocate and a vital part of a global team that's focused on creating seamless, integrated content experiences.
What You Will Do
As a Technical Communicator, you’ll lead the content efforts for our products and help design and develop clear, user-focused content to ensure our operators and technicians succeed with CTCT products. You’ll be a key part of our Information Experience vision, which means you’ll go beyond static help files to create dynamic, integrated content experiences, including UX writing, graphics, and video.
This role will give you the opportunity to:
- Design and develop clear, concise, user-focused content to help operators and technicians succeed with CTCT products.
- Explore and develop diverse content including UX Writing, graphics, videos, UI-integrated help, and other dynamic delivery channels.
- Contribute to the content strategy and execute our Information Experience vision across multiple product lines.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Product, UX, Support, and Training, to deeply understand and meet user needs.
- Advocate for users across the product lifecycle and influence product decisions with a user-first mindset.
What Skills & Experience You Should Bring
- You've had at least three (3) years of experience. You’ve spent the last 3+ years writing technical content for complex software or hardware products. You have experience with information architecture and creating reusable content structures, and you're familiar with structured content authoring tools and content management systems (MadCap Flare is a plus!).
- You're an excellent writer and communicator. You have an outstanding ability to write and edit with attention to detail and tone. You can also confidently navigate ambiguity and switch context between long-form documentation, embedded help, and video.
- You're an advocate for the user. You can balance technical accuracy with accessibility for diverse user personas, and you've got a strong portfolio that showcases clear, thoughtful content in a range of formats or delivery methods.
- You're a self-starter. You're a curious and creative person who can work independently in a dynamic, iterative environment, but you also collaborate well with others. You can perform research into products and features and understand technical concepts.
Bonus Points
- Experience creating video or multimedia learning content.
- Familiarity with version control systems and agile development practices.
- Exposure to web development, visual communication, or UX writing.
- Background in construction, civil engineering, or heavy equipment.
Please Note: Only applicants legally entitled to work in New Zealand will be considered.
