Trainee Owner/Operator – New World Whitianga
Are you ready for your next big leadership challenge?
We’re looking for a capable and driven Trainee Owner/Operator to step into a senior leadership pathway at New World Whitianga. This is your chance to prove to yourself and others that you have what it takes to lead in a fast-paced, complex retail environment — with a clear development path and hands-on support.
In this pivotal role, you’ll report directly to the Owner Operator and work alongside department managers to drive performance and strategy storewide. You’ll also have the opportunity to set and lead your own strategic projects that support store development, performance, and innovation.
This could be a development term placement or a permanent opportunity — depending on the fit and future vision.
What you’ll be responsible for:
- Leading, supporting, and developing department managers and team leaders
- Owning and delivering on key store performance goals (financial, operational, and customer service)
- Creating and executing strategic initiatives to improve store performance
- Maintaining high standards across food safety, merchandising, and team culture
- Identifying and delivering project-based work to grow and futureproof the business
- Playing an active role in succession planning and long-term leadership development
- Driving culture and engagement across the wider team
Why this role is unique:
New World Whitianga is located in a seasonal, tourist-driven region — requiring strong planning, agility, and long-term strategy to maintain consistent results year-round. You’ll need to think ahead, manage demand shifts, and ensure smooth execution even during peak pressure periods.
What we’re looking for:
- 5+ years in supermarket or retail leadership (store, department, or multi-site)
- Strong commercial acumen and people leadership skills
- Excellent planning, communication, and decision-making ability
- Experience with budgets, rostering, compliance, and store operations
- A passion for culture, people development, and community engagement
- Experience in both Dry Goods and Fresh Foods is an advantage
What’s in it for you:
- A hands-on, autonomous development role reporting directly to the Owner Operator
- The opportunity to own strategic projects that shape store success
- A values-based, supportive culture where development is prioritized
- Mentorship from a seasoned Owner Operator with 25+ years’ experience in retail, food, and a bachelor's degree in teaching.
- Competitive salary and the potential for a long-term leadership pathway
