Chartered Professional Engineers Council

On behalf of the Minister of Building and Construction, the Ministry is seeking candidates who wish to be considered for appointment as a member of the Chartered Professional Engineers Council.

About CPEC

The Chartered Professional Engineers Council (the Council) is a statutory body established under the Chartered Professional Engineers Act 2002 (the Act). The Council's role includes reviewing proposed changes to rules, hearing appeals from decisions of the Registration Authority in relation to registration and complaints and reviewing and reporting to the Minister on the performance of the Registration Authority.

Person Specifications

At this time, the Minister for Building and Construction is seeking candidates for member roles on the Council, whose skills and experience align with the following:

Specific skills required

Professional Engineer:

  • Chartered Professional Engineers or have equivalent New Zealand experience, across a range of engineering disciplines (e.g., mechanical, electrical, environmental, structural, geotechnical, chemical, software, or systems engineering).
  • Demonstrated expertise in their engineering discipline, with a strong understanding of industry standards, innovation, and emerging technologies.
  • Understanding of ethical responsibilities, risk management, and impacts of engineering decisions.

Additional skills, experience and attributes required

Ideally candidates will have one or more of the following:

  • an appreciation of the responsibilities of the Council
  • applicable legal experience / familiarity to inform the appeals process
  • governance experience and in particular governance in the public section
  • the ability to work effectively in a collegial decision-making environment
  • commitment and integrity
  • effective communications skills
  • understanding of statutory responsibilities and government processes, for example accountability and conflict of interest
  • understanding of the role of engineers within society across various disciplines.

Anyone who is a member of the governing body of the Registration Authority, or an employee of the Registration Authority is excluded from consideration for the Chartered Professional Engineers Council.
