Are you passionate about maritime safety and ready to make an impact across one of New Zealand's most unique coastal and inland environments?

Environment Southland is looking for a capable and community-minded Deputy Harbourmaster to join our Harbourmaster's team. From the rugged coastline of Fiordland to the serene waters of Stewart Island, this role is all about protecting and enabling safe navigation for all water users across the Southland region.

About the role

As the Deputy Harbourmaster, you'll be responsible for supporting the Harbourmaster in ensuring the safe navigation of all coastal waters, lakes and navigable waterways of the Southland region, through the provision of public education, community engagement and the implementation and maintenance of sound safety and risk management systems.

Who you are...

You'll be a resilient, engaging, individual with a passion for getting things done, and enabling others to do their bit. You'll come to us with significant prior experience in a maritime environment, and whilst it's desirable for you to hold a Harbourmaster Diploma, senior commercial masters certificate or have pilotage experience, we are happy to accept applications from those with a minimum qualification of a Skipper Restricted Limits, with at least 5 years' experience in this role

In partnership with our community, Environment Southland (Southland Regional Council) is responsible for the sustainable management of Southland's natural resources - our land, our water, our air and our coast. As a Regional Council we operate across a large geographical region which extends from Stewart Island to Fiordland.

Working at Environment Southland requires all of our staff to uphold the council's Te Tiriti o Waitangi responsibilities as part of their day-to-day role. This might be through the appropriate delivery of functions through various legislation where Te Tiriti o Waitangi or partnering with mana whenua is required or upholding the commitments that our elected councillors have made to Ngāi Tahu ki Murihiku through the Charter of Understanding.

An initial offer of remuneration will be made within the range $95,040 - $100,320
