Job Description


The Opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi

This is a pivotal leadership role at the University of Auckland, responsible for enabling strategic alignment, insight-led planning, and enterprise-wide performance.

As Director - Strategic Planning & Programmes, you will lead a newly shaped function that supports the University’s strategic direction through integrated planning, data governance, and programme enablement. You will oversee the development of planning frameworks, performance measures, and strategic initiatives that contribute to the University’s long-term success—enhancing institutional effectiveness, operational agility, and service design.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, you will lead a diverse team that brings together strategic planning, business capability, data insights, and programme delivery. With visibility across the full strategic cascade—from institutional strategy to implementation and outcomes—you will help ensure decisions are informed, aligned, and impactful.

You will lead a portfolio working across the University, including education, research, and professional services, to support strategic alignment and enable new ways of operating. You will engage with senior leaders and government agencies to support investment planning, optimise funding, and contribute to the University’s reputation, sustainability, and success.

You’re a senior professional with a strong track record in directing strategic planning, performance, or transformation in complex organisations. You bring a big-picture mindset, backed by deep experience in guiding teams, shaping strategy, and delivering results.

Your background will demonstrate:

  • Proven experience driving enterprise-wide planning, business improvement, or programme delivery
  • Ability to support and develop high-performing teams through change
  • Confidence interpreting and reporting on data, insights, and performance frameworks to support decision-making
  • A collaborative and influential style, with the ability to engage senior leaders and external partners
  • A sound understanding of the higher education sector and how to support strategic alignment across diverse portfolios
  • A commitment to equity and understanding of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
