The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Medicine is unique in New Zealand. Surgical and medical components of musculoskeletal diseases and injuries are combined into one discipline utilising both academic and service personnel. A vibrant research culture exists in the Department. We are involved in many projects primarily in the areas of clinical outcomes, cartilage regeneration, tissue engineering, joint arthroplasty, rehabilitation, bioengineering and function of tetraplegic patients. We deliver comprehensive teaching of musculoskeletal disorders and pain management to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Our postgraduate programmes provide clinically-orientated academic training for a wide range of health and related professions.

The Role / Te Mahi

The department is inviting applications for the position of Lecturer. The successful candidate will focus on the Pain and Pain Management programme, which is one of the three main postgraduate programmes in the department. Key responsibilities in this role include:
  • Engaging in research activities including supervision of research students and to support the pain research focus of the Postgraduate Programmes in Pain and Pain Management.
  • Collaborating with the Academic Coordinator and members of the pain teaching team to ensure teaching/learning meets the IASP Interprofessional Curriculum requirements and aligns with University of Otago teaching/learning best practice guidelines.

Successful candidates must have the following skills and experience:
  • PhD or equivalent doctorate in appropriate field normally preferred. Master’s degree minimum, and or relevant postgraduate qualifications.
  • Demonstrated capacity for independent research.
  • May be transferring knowledge to the community and industry for the development of products and services that benefit society.
  • Commitment to upholding the University’s core values related to support and success of Māori and Pacific students, aligned with the University’s Māori Strategic Framework and Pacific Strategic Framework.

This is a part-time (0.4 FTE), permanent position, based in Ōtautahi, Christchurch.
