About the position:
The purpose of this position is to provide technical support for research and consulting projects in fisheries, ecology and biosecurity to inform marine ecosystem management. We seek a motivated marine sciences graduate to work as an effective team member across a number of projects. You will help with the delivery of projects that involve engaging with industry, laboratory work and data management & analysis. You'll work in coastal settings as part of a field team conducting boat-based activities, while also collecting samples at commercial fishing premises. This position sits within the NIWA business unit of Earth Sciences New Zealand.
Key responsibilities include:
- Undertake fisheries monitoring activities, with particular emphasis on the sampling of fish landings at licensed commercial packing establishments.
- Processing samples collected during ecological field surveys.
- Managing data (i.e. processing, compiling, validating, databasing and archiving data post collection)
- Assisting with Recreational Fisheries survey co-ordination and data management.
- Assisting with biosecurity surveys and other marine ecology fieldwork.
What you'll bring:
- A degree in the marine sciences and sound knowledge of the New Zealand marine environment.
- Excellent practical skills and be able to contribute effectively in the field - boating experience will come in very handy.
- Experience working on laboratory tasks, as well as proficiency across a range of computing, video and data handling skills.
- You'll be a top team player and have great communication skills, a flexible approach to a dynamic work environment and a can-do attitude to solving problems.
