At Toi Moana Bay of Plenty Regional Council, our environment and our people go hand-in-hand. We’re looking for a Network Engineer to take ownership of our core network and telephony systems, ensuring seamless, secure, and efficient service delivery across our organisation and partner councils. This is a vital hands-on technical role with scope for leadership in project delivery and network design. You'll help shape the stability, performance, and security of the systems that underpin all of our digital services.
Te āhuatunga a te tūranga | About the role
Reporting to the Chief Security Officer, you will be responsible for the provision and monitoring of our complex interconnected systems which form our network infrastructure. In this role, you will:
- Manage and optimise the day-to-day operation of networking devices like switches, firewalls, ONT’s and access points.
- Troubleshoot and resolve outages or performance issues across WAN, LAN, and VPN systems.
- Lead and contribute to network-related projects, including planning, implementation and documentation.
- Support VoIP and traditional telephony infrastructure, ensuring availability and quality of service.
- Provide specialist advice to internal teams and council partners on network design, security, and best practice.
- Maintain documentation and support continuity through robust change and configuration management.
Ō pūmanawa | Your skills and experience
You will have excellent communication and customer service skills and at least 5 years’ relevant experience in the IT industry to ensure you have sound knowledge of server and desktop operation systems, routing and switching technologies.
You will also:- Have at least 5 years’ experience managing WAN & LAN networks in an enterprise environment.
- Have a relevant tertiary qualification in computing, information systems, computer science or business computing.
- Have well-developed knowledge of routing and switching technologies, firewalls, QoS, BGP, VoIP and traditional telephony systems.
- Be able to keep calm and work under pressure.
- Take a methodical and logical approach to problem solving.
- Working knowledge of passive optical network would be advantageous.
- Be an effective communicator, both verbally and written.
- Be able to work collaboratively both within and across teams, but also autonomously when required.
- Be available to be part of the on-call roster for after-hours support.
- Be great at multi-tasking and have effective project coordination skills.
