About us

The Ministry of Social Development is a people-centred organisation. We're in communities across the motu, working with partners to help New Zealanders be safe, strong and independent.

We provide social policy and advice to government and assistance, including income, employment and housing support to people of all ages, families, whanau and communities.

As a Te Tiriti o Waitangi partner we are committed to supporting and enabling Maori, whanau, hapu, Iwi and communities to realise their own potential and aspirations.

Our people are as diverse as the communities we serve. We care about the wellbeing and success of our people and provide a supportive and inclusive working environment where people can thrive and be who they are.

Purchasing Specialist

  • Permanent opportunity

We're looking for a motivated and forward-thinking professional to be part of our high-performing team in beautiful Rotorua!

We're on the lookout for someone who knows the ins and outs of purchasing and is excited about creating better, smarter ways to buy. If you have experience identifying opportunities, streamlining processes, and implementing supplier agreements that boost efficiency - we want to hear from you.

What you'll be doing:

  • Be a Trusted Advisor: Work closely with suppliers and internal teams to ensure smooth purchasing operations and quick issue resolution. Offering expert advice and becoming the go-to person stakeholders rely on.
  • Customer-Focused: You'll solve real-world challenges and deliver exceptional service that makes a difference.
  • Stay Compliant: Ensure all purchasing activities meet internal policies and comply with public sector procurement rules.

What you'll bring

  • Proven Experience: You'll be a commercial purchasing whiz with plenty of experience in procurement or purchasing under your belt
  • Relationship Management Skills: You will be able to establish, build and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of staff
  • Interpersonal Skills: You'll be able to adapt to your audience, building trust and advocating for our people

You'll play a critical part in bringing contracts to life. From overseeing daily purchasing needs to unlocking value through smart supplier relationships and effective catalogues, your impact will be seen and felt across the business.

This is more than a job - it's a chance to build strong connections, make meaningful contributions, and thrive in a supportive, innovative environment.
