Roading Engineer

LGJobs
Kaikōura District
Full time

Do you know your way around sealed and unsealed low volume road networks, RAMM, and council processes like the back of your hand?

Waimate District Council is on the lookout for an experienced Roading Engineer, someone who's spent time out on the road and understands what it takes to keep things moving. We're after a practical thinker who can help us make smart, informed decisions about our network especially when it comes to prioritising jobs, managing tight budgets, and balancing the needs of our rural community.

It's an ideal opportunity to gradually step into greater responsibility while absorbing the knowledge that's ready to be handed over.

What You'll Be Doing

As our Roading Engineer, you'll be working alongside the Roading Manager to help ensure Council provides an effective and efficient Roading activity to the public. You will also:

  • Prioritise and plan forward works for sealed roads, unsealed roads and drainage programmes
  • Make the tough calls on what gets done first - balancing needs, budgets, and timing
  • Coordinate the collection of asset data and traffic counts
  • Prepare forward work programmes using RAMM data and inspection information
  • Assist with asset valuations, capitalisation, and data accuracy
  • Coordinate reporting to NZTA Waka Kotahi, REG, and Council
  • Support funding applications and monthly financial reporting
  • Prepare contract documents and designs for roading projects
  • Assist with contract administration, procurement, and budget control
  • Work collaboratively with other Road Controlling Authorities through Te Ringa Maimoa (REG) and the Aoraki Roading Collaboration to share insights, align best practices, and strengthen regional transport outcomes
  • Mentoring the roading team and promote a culture of quality, value for money and continuous improvement

What You'll Bring

To thrive in this role, you'll need:
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in civil or highway engineering
  • 5-10 years' experience in the field, with strong background in managing physical works maintenance and renewal contracts
  • Hands-on experience with RAMM, and examples of how you've used it to deliver results
  • A solid understanding of asset management planning and forward works programming
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate across teams
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel (advanced) and Word (intermediate)
  • Excellent time management and a high level of personal reliability
  • Physically fit and comfortable working in the field
  • Work with limited supervision, take initiative, and deliver outcomes with minimal support.
  • A current and valid Class 1 New Zealand Driver Licence
  • A commitment to professional development and active participation in sector forums

Hours and Perks

  • Monday to Friday, 8.00am - 4.30pm (37.5 hours/week with a 1-hour lunch)
  • Birthday leave, upfront sick leave, and workplace wellbeing support
  • Up to 5% employer contribution towards KiwiSaver/Super Easy superannuation scheme

Why Make the Move to Waimate?

You'll be based in one of New Zealand's best-kept secrets. Think epic scenery, outdoor adventures, affordable living, friendly locals—and no soul-crushing traffic. We're close to Aoraki/Mount Cook, the Waitaki Lakes, and only a short drive to Timaru and Oamaru.

Whether you're after a better work-life balance or a place where your skills can have a visible impact, Waimate offers the lifestyle and the role to match.

You must have and maintain the legal right to work in New Zealand and hold a full, current driver licence. This role is subject to a satisfactory Police and Credit Check.
