This position provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to the design and enhancement of digital learning experiences within a nationally significant educational institution. As a UX Lead at Open Polytechnic, you will play a key role in shaping the user experience across our range of digital platforms.
You will be part of a collaborative and forward-thinking Experience Design Team, working in an environment that values innovation, accessibility, and continuous improvement. The role offers the chance to engage in meaningful design work that directly supports learner success, while also contributing to the development of scalable and inclusive digital solutions.
This is a role well-suited to a design professional who is passionate about user-centred design, committed to best practice in accessibility, and eager to contribute to the evolution of digital education in Aotearoa New Zealand.
This position is full-time permanent position is based at our campus in Lower Hutt, with some flexibility around working from home.
Key responsibilities include:
- Conduct user research and usability testing to inform design decisions.
- Develop personas, prototypes, and actionable insights using UX metrics.
- Design wireframes and high-quality user interfaces using responsive/adaptive design and Angular Material components.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define features and ensure alignment with user needs.
- Maintain and evolve the iQualify brand, including digital assets and marketing collateral.
- Ensure all design work meets accessibility standards and government web guidelines.

The position description sets out in detail the experience, skills and competencies you will bring to this role, with the following deemed critical to your successful performance of role accountabilities:
- A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in digital/UX design.
- Strong understanding of UX principles, interaction design, and user interface development.
- Experience designing for complex applications across multiple devices/viewports.
- Proficiency in design tools such as Figma and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Familiarity with usability testing software and web technologies (Angular, HTML, CSS).
- A creative, proactive mindset with excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working in Agile or Lean environments is a plus.
