About the role

The Policy Advisor plays a key role in shaping high-quality policy recommendations from the Strategy, Policy International Engagement unit for both the Civil Aviation Authority and external stakeholders.

The Policy Advisor works closely with the Senior Advisors and across the wider Regulatory Policy and International Engagement teams to support the delivery of regulatory policy and rule development, and to support the CAA's engagement with international partners.

Responsibilities include:

  • Support the development of policy advice on aviation-related issues by conducting research, preparing background materials, and drafting components of policy documents.
  • Assist in reviewing regulatory and legislative proposals, including international technical agreements.
  • Prepare briefing notes, consultation documents, and policy materials for senior staff and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development of Civil Aviation Rules and other regulatory interventions by gathering evidence, analysing it and recommending solutions to problems.
  • Work with the wider team to scope, plan, and deliver policy projects, identifying risks and engaging stakeholders.
  • Support consultation processes by coordinating meetings, preparing materials, and summarising feedback.
  • Assist with the coordination of responses to international enquiries and information requests
  • Collaborate on New Zealand's participation in international aviation forums, including preparation and logistics.

Some national and international travel may be required.

The role is based at our National Office in Wellington.

The salary band for this position starts at $83,600 to a maximum of $102,302. Starting salaries are based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, as well as internal relativities.

What You Will Bring

You will have experience in a Policy Advisory role and an understanding of the machinery of government. To be successful in this role, you will have the following attributes:

  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in a policy advisory role within a regulatory environment.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to convey complex information.
  • Ability to show initiative, plan work and deliver results to the required standard and deadlines, with a minimum of supervision.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving ability and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
