Te Papa Atawhai - DOC is seeking a dedicated Asset Specialist – Roading to lead the national management of our roading assets, ensuring safe, consistent, and environmentally responsible access to our unique conservation areas.
As our Asset Specialist Roading, you will play a critical national leadership role, providing expert oversight and technical direction to ensure DOC's roading infrastructure is well-planned, maintained, and aligned with our strategic goals. Your work will help safeguard both the environment and the people who enjoy it.
The position will encompass:
- Developing and managing roading to align with DOC strategies, guidelines, and operational standards
- Providing expert advice and national oversight to ensure consistency and best practice across regions
- Leading reporting and quality assurance on roading inventories, asset valuations, and insurance
- Working with Waka Kotahi, including claims, forecasts, project programming, and procurement support
- Building strong relationships with internal teams, stakeholders, and partner agencies
- Supporting cross-functional initiatives and contributing to the continuous improvement of DOC's asset management systems and processes

If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you:
- A relevant qualification or significant experience in roading asset management
- Proven understanding of asset condition assessment, lifecycle planning, and infrastructure reporting
- Knowledge of international best practice in asset management, risk management, and resilience planning
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
- Experience in managing contracts, budgets, and reporting—ideally including coordination with Waka Kotahi
- A full New Zealand driver's licence
- A genuine interest in conservation and sustainable infrastructure.

The Asset Management Unit provides an effective and integrated asset management system across the Department's recreational, historic and biodiversity assets.
The team works closely with their regional planning colleagues around the country.

The salary range for this position is $108,617.00 – $137,645.00 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
