Haskoning delivers tailor made engineering and scientific solutions to our clients across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. We are experts in the maritime, river, estuarine and coastal sectors, providing consultancy advice and civil and structural design services to clients in a number of sectors.
A high level of collaboration and action across all levels of staff, disciplines, teams and geographies is required to develop environmental services, foster new partnerships and enter and scale new and existing markets. The current team includes engineers, scientists, commercial advisors, modellers and relevant experts, working collaboratively across all elements of the water and maritime sectors (plus additional markets as relevant to Haskoning’s other Business Lines (i.e. aviation, tunnels, renewables, decarbonisation, aviation, data centres, industry and transport).
What will you do
This role is pivotal to the continued growth of the NZ Environmental and Social Adaptation and Safeguards Team. You will provide technical strengths in a variety of potential service and business areas. You will help us to build on our current team capability and portfolio reach in NZ, the Pacific and Australia, and to also link up to our other entity teams in South-East Asia and elsewhere around the world. You will help to align the team to capitalize on shifting market demands and opportunities and seamlessly align with Haskoning’s global and regional vision and mission.
You will work closely with the Environmental Team Leads in NZ with a view to enhancing our technical delivery quality, with a primary focus on climate adaptation, disaster risk management and loss & damage (L&D).
Based on your skill sets and proven experience you will be involved in a variety of service delivery areas such as:
- Economic loss and damage assessment
- Non-economic loss and damage methodologies (incl. cultural heritage and biodiversity)
- Climate risk transfer to L&D frameworks
- Climate finance proposal development for L&D
- L&D policy or programme design
As an Environmental Consultant, you will be pivotal to the provision of quality environmental services within the New Zealand Water & Maritime team. With a focus on both local, regional, national and international delivery, you will be an instrumental part of the environmental and design offerings originating from New Zealand. Your skills and experience will also influence positively the growth of the New Zealand environmental team in a variety of potential service and market areas. This team growth would be ensured through the execution of an approved business plan, of which you will be asked to contribute to. You will also be responsible for overseeing technical excellence in relevant deliverables, the hiring of environmental personnel (perhaps in your geography and subject matter expertise) and also agreed commercial targets. You will help us to build on our current team capability and portfolio reach in New Zealand and the Pacific, and to also link up to our teams elsewhere in Australia, South-East Asia and around the world. You will help to align the team to capitalize on shifting market demands and opportunities and seamlessly align with Haskoning’s global and regional vision and mission.
Based on your skill sets and proven experience you will assist the Environmental Team in technically developing and growing the following business initiatives across Australia (other areas may be developed in time so this list is not exhaustive):
- Climate risk, resilience and adaptation. Working with our emerging climate adaptation and disaster risk teams across Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia. Providing technical leadership in economic loss and damage assessment, climate risk and financing, etc.
- Haskoning presence in New Zealand - the continued development of local service offerings to the South and North Island, and Pacific markets. To allow for the further development of Haskoning service offerings (i.e. water and maritime engineering and design) in future months and years - to be discussed in further detail.
- Environmental planning and consenting. Principally working with and alongside the engineering and design teams within Haskoning but also helping to forge environmental service offerings directly with external clientele where possible.

What you bring
You will have started building a career and strong reputation within these particular markets and be confident in providing input and advice on technical matters balanced with a commercial awareness. Further, you will be passionate about helping the team around you grow and develop through collaboration and teamwork. Specific things you will need include:
- Master’s degree or higher in climate science, environmental economics, disaster risk management, environmental policy, or related field
- Min 4 years’ experience in climate advisory consultancy.
- Strong understanding of Pacific regional context and institutional landscape
- Experience engaging with regional and multilateral climate processes (ideally, experience with International and Regional Agencies such as SPREP, UNFCCC, FRLD, Santiago Network).
- Demonstrated ability to work with donors, governments, and communities to co-design solutions.
- Experience in climate risk analytics and attribution science.
- Understanding of bidding processes for donor-funded projects.
- Fluency in Pacific languages or strong intercultural facilitation skills - desirable.
- Highly effective technical and practical skills in the relevant disciplines
