We are looking for a Flood Modeller – River Engineer to join the Regional Assets team. This is a full-time fixed term opportunity (up to 12 months).
The Regional Assets team is a multidisciplinary group within HBRC’s Asset Management Group, responsible for engineering design, asset planning, and strategic project delivery for the region’s flood control infrastructure, coastal resilience, and land portfolio.
In this role you will support the Principal Engineer, Flood Modeller and wider Engineering Team, with a primary focus on flood modelling, flood forecasting, and river management. A secondary focus will involve coastal engineering, river management infrastructure design, engineering consenting advice and responding to public engineering enquiries.

You will be a technically skilled and self-motivated professional with experience in river or coastal engineering, hydrology, or hydraulic modelling. You’ll bring strong analytical skills, proficiency in GIS and modelling tools, and the ability to design flood protection infrastructure and communicate complex data effectively. With a collaborative mindset and sound judgement, you’ll have strong interpersonal skills to engage confidently with fellow professionals and the public, and consistently deliver high-quality outcomes in a dynamic environment.
You will also have:
- Relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent tertiary qualification in Engineering or Science.
- Chartered Professional Engineer (or in the process) or equivalent professional membership is desirable.
- At least 5+ years relevant industry experience (e.g., river or coastal processes, hydrology, modelling, natural resource engineering).
- Practical knowledge of river engineering, including experience with modelling software (MIKE+, TUFLOW desirable).
- Sound understanding of the following legislations: Resource Management Act, Biosecurity Act, Reserves Act, Local Government Act, Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Act, Public Works Act.
- A valid driver's licence.

The salary range for this role is between $94,690 to $114,631 and will depend on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
