Mō te tūnga | About the role

Health New Zealand, Canterbury is seeking a dedicated and skilled Medical Officer/Head and Neck Clinical Fellow for a 12-month Fellowship position within our Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Department commencing July 2026. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain extensive experience in otolaryngology, with a focus on ablative head and neck surgery. The successful candidate will work independently, yet under the supervision and guidance of experienced consultants, contributing to both outpatient clinics and surgical operations, as well as participating in the after-hours call roster.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct outpatient clinics and operate independently on scheduled lists, with supervision and guidance from senior colleagues.
  • Participate in the after-hours on-call roster and provide support in clinics, operating theatres, and formal teaching sessions.
  • Engage in research projects relevant to the field, aiming for publication or presentation.
  • Ensure compliance with Te Whatu Ora and Hospital policies and procedures, and maintain a safe, healthy working environment.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including fellow medical professionals, nursing staff, allied health teams, and external agencies.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills & Experience

  • Registered medical practitioner with qualifications in Otolaryngology or currently completing specialist training from the Royal Colleges or an equivalent institution.
  • Eligible for registration to practice in New Zealand prior to commencement.
  • Demonstrated experience in Otolaryngology, with a minimum of three satisfactory professional references.
  • You will need to be eligible to gain registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand, to find out more please follow this link https://www.mcnz.org.nz/registration/

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure.
