The Ōtaki to North Levin project focuses on upgrading the transport link along State Highway 1 (SH1) between Ōtaki and North Levin to improve road safety, reduce congestion, enhance travel efficiency, and support regional economic growth. It is one of the Government’s Roads of National Significance and is being undertaken by two Alliances – the north (delivered by partners Fulton Hogan, HEB, WSP and Aurecon) and south (delivered by partners Downer, McConnell Dowell, Beca and Tonkin+Taylor).
This exciting new four-lane 24.8km highway project will dramatically improve safety and resilience, providing better access to walking and cycling facilities for those moving around or through the Horowhenua and Kāpiti districts. The project includes multiple large complex bridge structures plus a full interchange at Taraua Road, a half interchange north at Taylors Road, two roundabouts and approximately 4m m3 of complex earthworks significant, drainage infrastructure and a structural asphalt concrete pavement.
In partnership with NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, Muaūpoko Tribal Authority, local hapū of Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga, and the Horowhenua District Council, this project will be executed through a two-alliance approach. Each alliance will be responsible for delivering a section of the road and associated works, ensuring a collaborative and comprehensive delivery.

Reporting to the People and Culture Manager, you will be key in developing and leading a project culture that holds safety as a core value.
In this role you will have the opportunity to liaise with a range of stakeholders, with the intention of ensuring that all works undertaken on-site meet national legislative standards, ensuring that everyone on site is competent, capable and equipped to carry out their roles. You will be working with some of the best in the business and will be given mentoring opportunities and the chance to grow in your role.
Our ideal candidate is a Health and Safety professional who is passionate about people, maintaining safety standards as well as developing methods for the prevention of LTI’s in a Civil Construction environment.

We’re looking for someone with:
- The confidence to deliver messages and present at toolboxes
- Approximately 10 years’ solid practical experience in a Health and Safety role preferably in the Construction industry
- Enjoy being out on site at the ‘coal face’ of what is going on
- Ability to engage and influence to achieve positive outcomes
- The ability communicate effectively with all levels of staff and subcontractors
- Must enjoy the paperwork/compliance side of H&S and have high computer literacy
- An understanding of heavy plant/equipment and construction methodology
- Knowledge of safety compliance and systems requirements
- Safety Investigation and report writing skills.
