About the team
Grid Delivery is the Transpower division is accountable for the delivery of all work across New Zealand's transmission network. This includes increasing project and maintenance work, delivered in conjunction with our service provider organisations. Transpower currently delivers approximately $400M capex and $100M in opex per annum.
The HVDC & Power Electronics team supports Grid Delivery by providing operational and maintenance support of Transpower's HVDC & Power Electronics assets. This includes supporting projects associated with these assets and future planning that will ensure asset efficiency. About the opportunity
If you'd like a mix of site based and office work with a friendly and supportive professionals and unique assets, join the team accountable for supporting the Interisland HVDC Link, Static Var Compensators (SVCs), Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs), Synchronous Condensers (Sync Cons), and Reactive Power Controllers (RPCs). The team ensures the assets are monitored, maintained, repaired, and operated in accordance with agreed standards.
Based initially at our Haywards Wellington substation (after a minimum of two years we would consider you being based in our Ōtara Auckland or Islanding Christchurch offices), with no two days the same, you'll enjoy dynamic work that includes:
- Asset management and enhancement, operation, and maintenance
- Fault response and major fault investigations (once trained you will be rostered onto our call-out scheme where you will provide 24/7 technical support for ~ one week each month)
- Site work at substations around New Zealand e.g. HVDC Link: Benmore to Haywards electricity cable | Engineering NZ
- Project technical support
- Equipment commissioning/operational acceptance
The grid of the future will move away from large rotating machines and use more power electronics as our generators move to inverter-based systems. You'll be involved in exciting future projects including an exciting upgrade programme https://www.transpower.co.nz/hvdc-upgrade
What will you bring?
At Engineer level - to be considered, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate:
- A bachelor's degree in engineering (Washington Accord) and ~ two or more years relevant work experience
- Knowledge of high voltage substation assets including primary and control and protection
- Sound understanding of root cause asset fault analysis
- High levels of, and passion for using ICT systems as part of your engineering work
- A full, clean, New Zealand Drivers licence
While not essential, any of the following understanding/experience is advantageous:
- Project engineering experience/exposure, risk management and assessment
- Knowledge of control systems
