The Liver Research Unit at Te Toka Tumai (Grafton) has an exciting opportunity for someone experienced in Clinical Research to be appointed to the role of Research Unit Manager.

The Research Unit Manager works in partnership with Professor Gane, Principal Investigator and Clinical Lead for the Unit, a Research Nurse Coordinator, and Principal Investigators to provide leadership and to oversee the development, implementation and management of research activity within the Liver Research Unit (LRU) of the New Zealand Liver Transplant Unit (NZLTU)

LRU has grown rapidly both in terms of footprint and staffing over the past 20 years to parallel the successful development of new therapies for previously untreatable liver diseases and liver cancer. LRU is located within the Auckland City Hospital Support Building in close proximity to the NZLTU. LRU has a newly commissioned daystay facility plus clinic rooms adjacent to the LRU offices. The team consists of Professor Gane and three other consultant hepatologists (as Principal Investigators), a Research Unit Manager, three Research Coordinators, a Research Assistant, a Research Nurse Coordinator, five Specialty Clinical Nurses, two Research Physicians (MOSS and Advanced Trainee), a Medical Scientist and a PhD student (advanced trainee in Gastroenterology).

LRU conducts Phase 2 and Phase 3 international clinical trials in many different hepatological conditions including metabolic (fatty) liver disease, chronic viral hepatitis (HBV and HCV), alcoholic liver disease, autoimmune liver diseases (including autoimmune hepatitis,and Primary Biliary cholangitis) and inherited liver diseases (Wilson’s Disease, alpha-1 antitrysin deficiency and Amyloidosis. LRU has become the largest site in the Asia Pacific region for clinical trials in both early (adjuvant) and advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC, liver cancer),evaluating combinations of new small molecule and immunotherapies

LRU has also conducted many studies in patients before and after liver transplantation (including prevention and treatment of infections, rejection and recurrence of primary liver disease).

As lead site within New Zealand, LRU helps coordinate study set-up in other research sites in Christchurch and Wellington. The Manager is encouraged to increase our collaboration with other sites, nationally and internationally

In addition to the pharmaceutical-funded studies, LRU will conduct Investigator Initiated and publicly funded research (Health Research Council, AMRF, NZGES Fellowships). The role provides operational management to oversee effective and efficient day to day operation of the research team with emphasis on the on-going sustainability of the research department, its reputation and economic resources.

  • You will be an enthusiastic leader, committed to furthering yourself and your peers with the ability to role model the Te Toka Tumai values.
  • You will have at least 5 years of Research Co-ordination experience including working knowledge and oversight of clinical trials
