Te Puni Kokiri is the government's principal policy advisor on M ori wellbeing and development. We achieve strategic influence with a focus on providing high quality policy advice and holding other agencies to account for delivering public services to, for, and with M ori. This includes our mandate to promote M ori achievement in education, training, health and economic resource development along with performing our monitoring and mentoring roles.

Based in Poneke Wellington, our Policy Puni leads across the public sector to understand and prioritise issues, needs and opportunities impacting on M ori development and wellbeing. The Puni consists of 8 teams focusing on specific Policy areas.

Te whai w hitanga | The opportunity

The M ori Public Policy team supports policy development through the application of Te Ao M ori frameworks. Part of the the work programme includes:

  • The development of the annual Section 8i Report - a report on the Crown's progress on implementing the recommendations from the Waitangi Tribunal
  • Embedding Te TautuhioRongo Framework and other Te Ao M ori frameworks
  • Supporting the continuous improvement of policy quality

Providing a high standard of advice to the Policy Manager and other key stakeholders within Te Puni Kokiri and across the wider public sector. You will help to shape and influence policy and will:

  • Provide credible, evidence-based high quality analysis and robust research and advice that impacts on M ori positively and contributes to thriving wh nau
  • Conduct thorough and detailed analysis of complex policy issues to understand their implications and identify potential solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with peers at Te Puni Kokiri and with other government agencies including the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Public Service Commission, the Ministry of Justice, etc.
  • Apply and advise on te ao M ori and Te Tiriti based frameworks as they relate to policy.
  • Provide advice and support to Senior and Executive Leadership teams, Ministers and key stakeholders.
  • Uplift capability within the team through coaching and mentoring kaimahi,and promoting a culture of continuous feedback.

The likely appointment range for this role is between $104,056(90%) and $115,617 (100%) per annum. The full salary range of the grade is $104,056(90%) and $138,741 (120%)

Mou | About you

An experienced policy professional, you will have previous experience in a government policy shop where te ao M ori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi frameworks underpin your mahi. You will have:

  • The mix of knowledge, skills, practices, and behaviours required by a modern policy practitioner to be able to deliver quality policy advice.
  • Prior experience in a government policy making.
  • Comfort working in an ao M ori environment and in situations where tikanga is observed.
  • An understanding of, and ability to prioritise, the flow of information and manage complex policy issues.
  • Highly developed communication skills, especially written communication.
  • Experience in building key stakeholder relationships and the ability to explain complex issues clearly to diverse audiences, including non-technical experts.
