Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Rawa Limited (“WRL”) is the commercial investment company for central Tāmaki tangata whenua and ahi kā, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. WRL is responsible for protecting and growing the $1.47 billion asset base to support whānau and their aspirations for generations to come.

About the role
In this newly created role, you will work closely with the General Counsel and engage directly with key internal and external stakeholders to support WRL’s business objectives and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory obligations.
A key component of the role will be to lead or provide support on the many significant transactions that WRL engage in for the benefit of future generations. The transactions have a strong property focus and include strategic projects, property acquisitions/sales, development agreements, leasing, joint ventures, partnering relationships and construction. This role is strongly “hands on” and will see you operating as part of a collaborative, high performing team in a vibrant and supportive work environment. You will provide and facilitate sound legal advice to the business and effectively manage external legal advisor relationships. You will also develop your commercial and strategic skills as you contribute to the structuring and negotiation of commercial arrangements and play a key role in the project management and coordination of transactions.
There is the opportunity to be involved in a broader range of legal work including corporate, regulatory, compliance, governance, potentially disputes and litigation and to contribute positively to legal team culture and initiatives.
What we are looking for
- Qualified lawyer with NZ practising certificate (or eligibility to hold one)
- A minimum of 8 years PQE gained in private practice or in-house
- Property or commercial law experience preferred however legal experience in other areas considered
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build trusted and enduring relationships
- Ability to adapt to a variety of projects and legal matters
- A positive attitude with the ability to multi-task, prioritise and take ownership of matters
- A knowledge and understanding of te reo maōri and tikanga would be an advantage, or enthusiasm to develop in these areas.
