Job Description
As the Equipment Coordinator – NZ, you’ll play a key role in keeping our container fleet moving smoothly across New Zealand. From coordinating daily container movements and vessel processing to ensuring system accuracy and tracking dwell times, you’ll be at the centre of our equipment operations. You’ll collaborate closely with the Equipment Lead and cross-functional teams to maintain full visibility of container flows, support seamless logistics execution, and drive continuous improvement in how we manage our fleet.
What you will be doing:
Health & Safety
- Champion a safety-first culture by consistently following all relevant HSE legislation, codes of practice, and operating procedures.
- Promote and reinforce NPDL’s Health, Safety, and Environmental policies through your daily actions and decisions.
- Understand the safety-critical aspects of your role and lead by example to ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
Equipment Coordination
- Drive the execution of equipment strategies across the NPDL Group by keeping container operations running smoothly and efficiently.
- Keep systems up to date with accurate container movement data, depot stock levels, and fleet positioning.
- Coordinate closely with depots and transport providers to manage timely container releases, bookings, and returns.
- Track purchase orders end-to-end, ensuring cost visibility and operational transparency.
- Monitor container dwell times and inventory levels, raising red flags to the Equipment Manager when needed.
- Oversee the tracking of one-way lease containers, providing volume forecasts to relevant teams.
- Create and maintain insightful KPI reports covering inventory levels, movement volumes, and long-standing units.
- Spot discrepancies between forecasted and actual volumes, and escalate variances for swift resolution.
- Reconcile container movements across vessels and ports to ensure systems reflect reality on the ground.
- Support system and process improvements aimed at reducing unnecessary repositioning and maximising fleet utilisation.
- Liaise with vendors and assist with procurement tasks such as rate collection and service performance tracking.
- Coordinate with biosecurity agencies to ensure full compliance for all inbound container movements.
Operational Support
- Lend a hand to the NZ Operations team during peak times or staff absences, helping to keep things moving seamlessly.
- Broaden your knowledge of NPDL’s wider operations to enable effective back-up and cross-functional support when needed.
- Develop a working understanding of broader operations functions to enable back-up and cross-coverage support.
Qualifications
Here’s what you’ll bring to the table:
- Around 2 years of experience in a similar role – but we’re more interested in your attitude and potential than a perfect CV.
- Experience in the shipping or logistics industry is a bonus, but not essential.
- A qualification in supply chain, logistics, or a related field gives you a strong foundation to thrive.
- Self-motivated with the drive and initiative to take ownership and make things happen.
- Strong interpersonal skills – you’re a natural collaborator who builds positive working relationships.
- High levels of integrity and a strong work ethic – you care about getting it right and ensuring the right controls are in place.
- Results-driven and resilient – you enjoy a challenge and perform well under pressure.
- Excellent communication skills – able to engage clearly and confidently with teams across all levels and locations, especially within NZ.
- Analytical mindset with sharp problem-solving skills – you get to the root of issues and take action.
- Confident with Microsoft Office tools – especially Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook – and ready to use them to deliver smart solutions.
This is a full-time permanent role in Parnell, Auckland. As you have worked in shipping in the past, you will know a level of flexibility is required at times to work extended hours including weekends, afterhours and public holidays as needed to meet business needs.
