Mō Tēnei Tūranga Mahi - About the Role

The Student Events Coordinator, working 18.75 hours per week, plays a key role in enriching the student experience at Ara Institute of Canterbury by cultivating a dynamic, inclusive, and welcoming campus environment. This position is responsible for designing and delivering events and activities that celebrate the diversity of Ara's ākonga (students), fostering a strong sense of belonging, equity, and cultural identity.

Collaborating with internal stakeholders—including academic faculties, Marketing and Recruitment, and Student Advisory Services—the Coordinator ensures that all learners feel connected and valued. The events and initiatives led by this role will highlight student diversity, encourage engagement, and support student success, all while aligning with Ara's Vision 2030 and its commitment to equity and inclusion.

Ngā Pūkenga Me Ngā Wheako - Skills and Experience

  • A tertiary qualification in event management, communications, student engagement, or a related field or equivalent knowledge gained through experience
  • Full, clean drivers licence
  • Proven experience in event coordination, preferably in a tertiary education or student-focused environment.
  • Experience working with diverse communities, including Māori, Pacific, international, and equity-seeking groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to create inclusive, culturally responsive events.
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving abilities to deliver engaging and innovative student events.
  • Competency with digital tools (including social media) for event promotion and management.
  • Ability to build a vibrant and welcoming campus culture that reflects the diversity of Ara's learner body.
  • Cultural competence, with a strong understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its implications for learner engagement.
  • Self-aware and able to adapt style for audience
  • Flexibility in hours of work to enable delivery of events that may run outside of a traditional 9am-5pm Monday to Friday work week.
