Mō te tīma/About our team
The Department of Psychology is one of the most popular departments at Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka – the University of Otago and has a large cohort of tauira Māori. Our award-winning teaching staff are passionate and innovative. We have a diverse student body and are strongly committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the University’s Māori and Pacific Strategic Frameworks, and to equity. The Department currently has a number of teaching fellows, who contribute primarily to our undergraduate degree programme by teaching and overseeing laboratory programmes and tutorials, teaching lectures and running papers, and supporting pastoral care of students.
Te mahi/The role
We are seeking an individual who is passionate, innovative and collegial, with a keen interest in delivering high quality teaching. In this full-time role, you will teach into, and coordinate the demonstrators for, the laboratory component of our 200 level papers, contribute to tutorial teaching in PSYC311 Quantitative Methods, and assist as required by the Head of Department in other areas of the curriculum.
- Co-ordinating with other lecturers and teaching fellows to develop and administer the laboratory or tutorial content and internal assessment for PSYC212, PSYC211, and PSYC311.
- Assisting with relevant teaching activities, including teaching at least one laboratory stream within PSYC212 and PSYC211, and statistics tutorials for PSYC311.
- Co-ordinating the laboratory content and running weekly training for a team of demonstrators each year to teach the laboratory component for PSYC212/PSYC211.
- Assisting with Departmental activities and outreach events to support student engagement, experience, and academic success, such as Hands On Science Otago for high school students each January and other events throughout the year.
- Carrying out administrative processes, compliance and reporting related to student engagement with academic material including check marking of internal assignments.
- Assisting with other areas of programme delivery, as time permits and as required by the Head of Department.
- Undertaking any relevant health and safety training to ensure sound health and safety practices are carried out.
Kā pūkeka me kā wheako/Skills and experience
- A postgraduate qualification in Psychology or a relevant discipline (or working towards one).
- Experience with teaching (tutoring, demonstrating, guest lecturing or similar).
- Keen interest in psychology, statistics, or related areas.
- Ability to co-ordinate and manage a team to deliver course laboratory content for PSYC212/PSYC211.
- Ability to develop creative solutions to engage students in their learning of psychology.
- Commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi), the University’s Māori Strategic Framework and Pacific Strategic Framework, and to equity.
- Proficiency with Microsoft software programmes and learning management platforms like Blackboard and general technological competence.
Familiarity with curriculum and programme delivery within the Department of Psychology, as well as an understanding of student support functions within the Department and the wider University, is preferred. Flexibility to work outside normal hours, when required, is also desirable.
Pūroko/Further details
This is a permanent position, up to full-time (1.0 FTE, negotiable) or two roles of 0.5FTE, located in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.
Successful candidates will be appointed to the position of Teaching Fellow or Senior Teaching Fellow dependent on academic achievement, skills and experience.
The salary range for this position is Teaching Fellow: $75,727 to $102,900 and Senior Teaching Fellow: $105,665 to $137,444 per annum.
