An opportunity to work with New Zealand’s award-winning public media company. RNZ aims to strengthen Aotearoa and the Pacific through informative, challenging and entertaining content. We are on the hunt for a digital leader to work with the team across the day and into the evening to ensure the constant flow of news and content to the website. This role also takes on the responsibility of news planning across the organisation.
Te Mahi – About the job
As Digital News Director you’ll help lead the daily execution of RNZ’s news content across digital platforms – ensuring our journalism is original, topical, diverse and impactful. You’ll drive audience engagement while supporting a high-performing team and working closely with editorial leaders across RNZ.
This is a hands-on senior digital role with a strong strategic element. You’ll play a key part in shaping RNZ’s digital journalism, from live coverage and platform optimisation to planning, innovation and newsroom collaboration.
RNZ is New Zealand’s only non-commercial public multimedia organisation and exists solely to serve the public interest by providing unique, impartial services and content to all New Zealanders.
Part of RNZ’s strategy involves continuing to expand our digital content and distribution to connect with a growing and increasingly diverse audience.
Key responsibilities include:

Driving live and breaking news coverage across RNZ’s digital platforms across the day and into the evening

Lead and manage news planning for the newsroom ensuring the diary is updated and strong, original content is prioritised;

Ensuring quality, accuracy and timeliness in all digital content

Using analytics to inform content decisions and drive audience growth

Working closely with the day editor/night editor, news staff, bureau chiefs and other editorial leaders

Model a collaborative and constructive approach that reinforces an ‘audience first’ focus and encourages team work.
Ōu Pūkenga - About You
Ideally you will have:

Experience in a senior digital editorial role

Strong editorial leadership skills

Newsroom planning

Excellent editorial judgement and a passion for public media

A sound understanding of digital storytelling, platforms and analytics

Confidence navigating legal and editorial risks
- Ability to communicate complex digital ideas clearly across teams

Please note, this a Fixed-Term Full-Time role (40 hours per week) for 12 months covering parental leave. This role can be based in Auckland or Wellington, ideally working from 1100-1900. We are also open to considering part-time, 32 hours per week.
