We are looking for L1 policy advisors, to join our high-performing policy team where you will sink your teeth into meaningful work – the kind of stuff that drives genuine change for the people of our country.
You will represent Inland Revenue as a subject matter expert and be a trusted advisor to government, parliament, select committees, and stakeholders – collaborating with other advisors and leaders to manage workflows and ensure effective changes to important tax and social policy issues.
Get set to let your critical thinking skills shine, as you deliver clear and concise advice on policy solutions and implementation options, aligned with relevant frameworks and guidelines.
To excel in this role, you would ideally have:
- 1-2 years’ experience in policy development or in a related area, along with an understanding of government priorities and the political context
- exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders
- excellent written and verbal communication abilities to tailor complex messages to diverse audiences
- the ability to drive a process involving a range of stakeholders and deliver results within required timeframes
- a relevant tertiary qualification.

The Inland Revenue Policy team is based in Wellington and advises Government on a range of tax and social policy issues. We research and develop policy options, and present policy recommendations to senior officials and Ministers. Unlike other policy shops, we also prepare our own legislation arising from those policy recommendations and our advisors support it through the legislative process.
