Waka Kotahi is seeking a talented'Senior UX/UI Designer'to lead the design of digital products that solve real customer problems, meet business goals, and align with technology roadmaps.
As a Senior UX/UI Designer, you'll lead the end-to-end product design process - from research and ideation, to wireframing, prototyping, and testing high-fidelity designs. You will help shape scalable, customer-focused solutions, and make a meaningful impact through human-centred design.
Collaboration and communication are key to this role, as you will present research insights and design recommendations in compelling ways to influence stakeholders and guide decision-making. Working closely with cross-functional digital squads, you'll deliver accessible and intuitive user experiences, while embedding design best practice across the product development lifecycle.
As a member of the Design Chapter, you will mentor other designers, foster a collaborative team culture, and champion human-centred design within an agile environment. You'll also contribute to our Design System, Human-Centred Design Centre of Excellence, and Design Community of Practice.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- Extensive experience delivering UX/UI design for digital products and applying human-centred design methodologies.
- Deep expertise in UX research methods and using customer insights to inform and validate UI designs, patterns and components.
- Deep understanding of the product development lifecycle, and how product design supports digital delivery.
- Strong communication and storytelling skills to effectively present design insights, influence decisions, and align teams.
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and foster a collaborative team culture.
- Strong relationship-building skills, with experience engaging stakeholders, peers, internal users, and external customers.
- Proven ability to navigate ambiguity, problem-solve, and adapt to evolving business needs.
- Strong experience working in agile delivery environments, integrating design seamlessly within squads.
- Proven ability to ensure product designs comply with WCAG and NZ government web standards.
- Strong proficiency in tools such as Figma, Optimal Workshop, Miro, Askable, and Adobe Creative Cloud.
- A commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and a willingness to engage with Te Ao Maori, tikanga, and Te Reo Maori.
