The General Insurance Solutions - Intermediate Underwriter is responsible for underwriting new and existing general insurance business within set underwriting guidelines, authority levels and service standards. This includes the review and appraisal of referred business, utilising independent judgement and underwriting knowledge and to accept, reject or modify applications and ensure a profitable book of business. As a General Insurance Solutions - Intermediate Underwriter you may focus domestic products including house, contents, car, boat and other accommodation products.
The position will also contribute to the development and maintenance of underwriting guidelines and provide coaching and support to less experienced staff in the handling of high risk and/or complex accounts within delegation levels.

What your day might look like
- Underwrite new and existing general insurance business, up to agreed delegation levels within MAS' risk appetite
- Ensure quality of underwriting activities is within limitations of MAS products and policy wording and in accordance with underwriting standards and best practice new business principles. This includes using judgment and underwriting knowledge to assess general insurance risks, retain business and contributing to the ongoing reviews of risk appetite in association with Senior Underwriters and Head of Underwriting
- Manage general insurance underwriting applications as referred by other MAS staff, within delegation levels, by analysing individual risk characteristics, providing advice and guidance on general insurance risks and assisting with comments or questions about applications and the likelihood of acceptance by MAS
- Review requests for renewal, cancellation and endorsement and request any additional documentation necessary for the consideration of an application, endorsement, renewal or cancellation
- Communicating terms of acceptance to Members and other staff as appropriate
- Support the identification of frequent claimants and situations with evolving risk factors and provide assistance in addressing renewal terms and conditions to manage MAS's exposure
- Assist in identifying risks which fall outside existing Reinsurance treaties and arrangements
- Develop, nurture and maintain excellent working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
What we're looking for
- Strong analytic, communication, and negotiation skills
- Strong knowledge of the fire and general insurance industry, products and their relationship to market issues and dynamics
- Excellent time management and organisational skills
- A strong working knowledge of Excel
- An ability to produce high quality written documentation
- Demonstrated computer skills and literacy
- An ability to self-motivate and work without supervision
- Demonstrates excellent teamwork
