We’re looking for a Summer Intern with an interest in Structural Engineering to join our team on a fixed term basis between November 2025 – February 2026.
About the role:
Based in the South Island, you’ll join one of our project teams, working under the guidance of the Project Manager and supported by the wider team.
You’ll be part of a real project team, working alongside experienced professionals who are passionate about delivering innovative and well-coordinated construction outcomes. This is your opportunity to see how your engineering studies come to life—on-site, in the office, and across real-world projects.
As an Engineering Summer Intern, you will gain hands-on experience working on-site with the construction team. This is a unique opportunity to apply your learning in a practical setting, get your hands dirty, and learn directly on the tools.
You will also:
- Help review structural drawings and documents for a live construction project
- Learn how structural design connects to the building process on site
- Support the team with design questions and updates to drawings
- Join meetings with engineers, subcontractors, and site teams
- Build practical knowledge about how structures are built safely and efficiently
To be eligible, you’ll be in your first or second year of tertiary study in Engineering with a civil or structural focus.
We are looking for students who are:
At least one year into their studies by the end of 2025
- Eligible to work in New Zealand over the summer
- Ready to work 45 hours per week from mid-November to late February
What we offer:
Joining Leighs means more than just summer work — it’s the first step in your career journey. Many of our past interns have gone on to join our Future Leaders Programme, where they’ve built long-term careers in project leadership, commercial management, and more.
Paid, fixed-term employment
- Real work experience that builds your CV and confidence
- Supportive mentoring from industry professionals
- Opportunities to connect with others on the same journey
- A place where you can make a meaningful impact from week one
