Are you an experienced Finance professional looking to make a real impact in the public sector? Christchurch City Council is seeking an experienced and proactive Principal Advisor to join our Finance team to provide high-level strategic advice and leadership on financial matters.
About the role | Ko te mahi nei
This pivotal role provides strategic and operational finance advice and information to the Finance team and wider organisation, driving best practice while supporting Council's planning, forecasting and reporting activities. You'll do this through:
- Providing leadership, mentoring and guidance to the finance team to create a culture of continuous improvement and high performance to build capability in financial modelling, reporting tools, and accurate preparation of financial information
- Advising on financial strategy issues and modelling of potential options
- Ensuring accurate and timely financial management advice is provided to internal users/teams and external parties, including responses to media, LGOIMA's, Councillors, and staff
- Identifying and implementing improvements to financial processes, systems, and controls to enhance efficiency and effectiveness and meeting changing legislative and regulatory requirements

We're looking for someone who thrives in complexity, instils calm in high-pressure situations, and knows how to balance strong relationships with sound judgment. Your extensive financial expertise and experience will make you a trusted and consistent voice across the unit. You will bring with you:
- A tertiary qualification in Accounting or Finance (or equivalent experience)
- A member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand
- Demonstrated financial experience within large and complex organisations
- Strong understanding of GAAP and Local Government reporting requirements
- A curiosity mind-set, you will have well developed problem-solving skills and enjoy working in a highly collaborative team environment. You will also be an effective communicator at all levels
- Solid accounting skills and experience working with complex budgets and financial reports, teamed with a good understanding of financial management systems

- Hours of work -37.5-40 hours per week
- Position - Permanent Full-Time
- Location - This position is primarily based at Te Hononga, Christchurch City Council Civic Offices - 53 Hereford Street
- Salary - The salary band for this position goes from $126,230 to $140,255 per annum based on a 40 hour week. Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
