Mō te Tūranga | About the role:
As a Principal Engineer, you'll tackle some of ASB's most complex engineering challenges and design solutions that uplift our entire Engineering Practice. You'll play a key role in our data platform modernisation journey, enabling innovative capabilities with AI.
This role is about more than just technical expertise — you'll build trust with technical and non-technical leaders, maintain momentum, and remove roadblocks to deliver meaningful business outcomes.
You'll be part of a tight-knit, autonomous, multi-disciplinary team of Principal Engineers driving engineering excellence across ASB. We work in agile ways and continuously grow our skills to improve outcomes for our customers.
Ō Pūkenga | About you:
You'll bring:
- Proven experience as an Engineering Leader or Architect in a modern tech environment at scale
- Deep expertise in cloud data platforms and tooling — e.g. Snowflake, Databricks, dbt
- Experience with event streaming (Apache Kafka or Confluent Cloud), containerisation, APIs, and CI/CD for data workloads
- Advanced knowledge of AI tooling and trends — e.g. generative AI, MLOps, agentic AI
- Strong understanding of public cloud platforms (Azure or AWS), including security and governance in large organisations
- Excellent interpersonal skills — able to build trust and communicate effectively across technical and non-technical teams
- Ability to switch context quickly, learn fast, and take people on the journey
