Are you an experienced technician with a strong understanding of health and safety in laboratory or technical environments? Are you passionate about creating safe, well-run facilities that support innovative teaching and research? We're looking for a proactive and people-focused Senior Technician - Safety and Compliance Support to join our Faculty Technical Services team at AUT.
This full-time, permanent position is based at our City Campus and plays a key role in supporting compliance across a wide range of specialist spaces within the Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies (DCT). The successful candidate will work closely with our Technical Specialist - Safety and Compliance to ensure the safe and compliant management of hazardous substances, equipment, and facilities across the faculty's four schools.
About the Role
In this role, you'll support compliance activities under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act (HSNO), help maintain inventories and documentation, and coordinate inductions and training for students and staff. You'll also deputise for the Specialist during absences, stepping into a leadership position to ensure consistent oversight of health, safety, and environmental practices.
This is a highly collaborative and hands-on role. You'll work across all four schools within the faculty, across diverse technical environments like labs, studios, and workshops, supporting both day-to-day operations and long-term compliance planning. Being approachable, adaptable, and relationship-driven is key to your success in this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Support compliance with HSNO and related codes of practice.
- Maintain hazardous substances registers and ensure correct storage and labelling.
- Assist with the development and maintenance of Safe Methods of Use (SMOUs).
- Deliver training, inductions, and guidance to staff and students.
- Coordinate waste disposal and environmental safety practices.
- Ensure emergency response procedures are up to date and regularly tested.
- Act in the capacity of the Technical Specialist during periods of absence.
- Build strong working relationships across the four schools and foster a culture of safety and cooperation.
