He angituutanga: The opportunity
Reporting to the Transport Safety Lead, typically in this role you will be responsible for prioritising and monitoring the Safety Improvement Program and completing safety auditing of Maintenance and Renewals Program including Capital and Private Development projects/proposals.
Some of the key outcomes for this role include:
- All customer and stakeholder enquiries are responded to in accordance with our Customer Promise in a timely manner and with a helpful can-do attitude that results in a positive customer experience.
- Council’s Safe System principles (Zero deaths or serious injuries resulting from crashes on the transport network) is applied to all transport projects.
- Lead in the assessment of the review of crashes in the city over the previous 5 years to identify issues and solutions which can be fed into the development of forward works programmes for maintenance and renewals as well as capital programmes.
- Assist in the assessment of capital projects (for both Council and Developers) to advise on the compliance and amendments required to comply with both Safe System principles (via the safety auditing process) and Council Bylaws and Plans eg Speed Management Plan.
- Mentoring other members of the team to ensure broad range of knowledge and information sharing across the team.
Qualifications

- An understanding of the Safe System concept, and a belief that Hamilton should strive to achieve a transport network free of death and serious injuries.
- A National Diploma in Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Engineering Technology and/or 5+ years’ experience in the Local Government Road Safety Environment.
- Previous attendance at the Safe System Engineering Workshop and/or Safe System Assessment Framework Training.
- Awareness of traffic engineering principles, transport law, NZS 3901 and relevant statutes and regulations.
- Influencing skills, able to encourage others’ behaviour and outcomes to support goals.
- Excellent numeracy and communication skills (both verbal and written).
- A good level of computer literacy, particularly Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability in integrating technical information into decision making.
- A collaborative working style, building strong networks and relationships with team members, stakeholders and customers.
- Proactive and able to use initiative to solve problems or create opportunities.
- Ability to work autonomously and manage workload, you will be a self-starter.
- Knowledge of basic project management techniques.
- Experience of working in local government environment.
- Current clean Full NZ (or equivalent) Drivers Licence.
- Experience working in local government (preferred, but not essential).
